“ I’ve been a regular at The Black Penny Bar for quite some time and I typically stop in weekly as a resident of the French Quarter. I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere, the drinks, and the overall vibe. Most of the staff I’ve encountered (both male and female bartenders) have been kind, fun, accommodating, and welcoming — especially since I like my drink made a very specific way. Even when it took a moment for them to get it right, it was never an issue because the service was always respectful. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago on a Tuesday night, I had a very disappointing experience with a bartender I had never encountered before. I explained how I like my drink (and I believe the bartender who was there previously had already communicated it as well). When my drink wasn’t made correctly, I politely asked if it could be remade. Instead of simply correcting it, he threw the drink out and yelled at me, stating that he would “never serve me again.” Because I was so shocked and disappointed — especially as a loyal customer — I spoke with a manager about the incident, hoping it would be addressed. I understand the French Quarter is a tourist-heavy area, but locals are also what keep places like this thriving, and I’ve spent a significant amount of money there regularly. Unfortunately, I returned last night and encountered the same bartender again. He refused to serve me, saying he had the right not to, and once again chose not to provide service. It’s truly unfortunate because I’ve never had a negative experience at this bar until this situation, and I genuinely enjoy the environment and the rest of the staff. However, based on how I was treated — and the fact that it appears this behavior was never addressed — I won’t be returning moving forward. ”
“ We decided to pre-game our ghost tour at the Black Penny since it's across from Louis Armstrong Park. It's kinda dimly lit with dark wood & brick inside - perfect for a hot New Orleans afternoon. It wasn't too busy and the bartender served us quickly and had time to chat a little bit. The cocktails were very good and decently priced. Would definitely drink here again. ”
“ If you know me you know I love a good dive bar and one did not disappoint. You know you found one when the soap dispenser is a condiment dispenser. The service was great. The drinks were on point. The atmosphere was everything you want in a dive bar. It was great. I highly recommend it. ”
“ Great place to hang out if you have your pup with you and don't want to leave them at home or in the hotel. Service was great, prices were good and dogs were welcome. Made the trip even better having pup welcome bars so close to each other. ”
“ Dive bar. Quirky. Great alternative for a fancy cocktail bar. No food, just good drinks. ”
